Project 2: Infographic Design

100 points (Due in Lab Week 6)

For the Infographic Design project, you must first come up with an idea you wish to express visually with all or some of the following elements: text, photos, maps, line art, shapes and graphic elements. You must then sketch your design on paper and produce it using Photoshop. Your Project Brief should include a description of your infographic that explains the idea or the message you were trying to communicate. You must also explain why you chose the elements that you used to communicate the message and where you got the information for your project. You will be evaluated on the creativity of your idea and the effectiveness of your final product.

Requirements:

  • Project Brief
  • A sketch of your infographic.  This doesn’t have to be a work of art, but it should include an outline of what your final product will look like.
  • A .psd (Photoshop) file with your infographic containing multiple layers organized with labels, links and folders.
  • Post a flattened .jpg to the class blog

RUBRIC FOR GRADING:

Project Brief and Sketch- 10 points

Does the student’s paper address the purpose of the infographic and how they plan to express this purpose?  Did the student include how they got the facts they are expressing visually?  Does the sketch show that the graphic was properly thought out before the student started working in Photoshop?

Technical Skills- 45 points

Does the student display an understanding of Photoshop? Did the student properly label their layers?  Did they link layers and use folders to organize their project? Did they use shapes? Did they format text? Did they use color? Are all included images the correct resolution and toned properly?  Is there a credit line included for all images used? Is the finished file saved in the right format? Were all parts of this assignment handed in at the appropriate time? Was the project uploaded to the blog?

Concept & design- 45 points

How creative is the concept? Did the student create a meaningful infographic? Does the infographic lead the viewer to a conclusion that is supported by the data? Does the design of the infographic make sense?  Is the infographic well organized and easy to interpret?  Were contrast, alignment, proximity and repetition all considered and used properly for this infographic?
