Project 1: Photo Essay

100 points due Week 4

The Photo Essay is a digital photo page made up of 5-10 images based on a theme. Each individual image must be edited and adjusted for color, brightness, sharpness, cropped, and resized. Students must hand in their layered .psd file to their lab instructor, post their collage on their lab blog, and hand in a project brief that answers questions about their project. Requirements:

  • Use at least five images, and no more than 10.
  • The photos, taken as a whole, should tell a simple story or make a statement.
  • Students MUST use photographs that they have taken themselves.
  • The photo collage should be 11×17 inches, either horizontal or vertical, with a resolution of 72
  • The only text on the page should be the title of the project
  • Students must hand in the layered .psd file titled with their last name (ex) askin-photocollage.psd.
  • Students must complete a project brief and hand it in with the assignment.
  • Save a copy of the project as a jpeg and post to the class blog

RUBRIC FOR GRADING THIS ASSIGNMENT

Design – 40

Do the images taken as a whole, say make a statement or tell a story? Did the student choose good images to communicate his/her idea? Did the student choose images of decent quality and composition for this project? Did the student arrange the photos in a design reflecting the design principles of Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity? Did the student include celebrity photos or other appropriated images that were expressly forbidden?

Technical – 45

Did the students edit the images properly? Is there evidence that the student considered color adjustments, and brightness/contrast adjustments for his or her images? Did the student crop the images well? Did the student maintain the correct proportions for all images or were some images stretched or squeezed? Was the correct file type handed in and all layers visible?

Project Brief – 15

Did the student submit a printed project brief? Was the brief sufficiently detailed and self-reflective of the project?
