Magazine Layout

Least favorite:
Bonsai by Martin Plazotta from Austria
I think the right alignment is kind of weird. I usually don’t automatically look to the right of the page, so it makes things a bit awkward. Also, I feel that there is way too much white space. I don’t like the color combination either.
Favorite:
Edo and Tokyo by Daisuke Sato from Japan
The graphics are great and I love the gradient boxes. Also, there is good and clean organization with the sub sections. I also like the background design behind the green platform. I think it works because it is right aligned, it has contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.

My favorite website layout was the Zakura design because of how it is very nice and clean and the colors really complement each other, especially with the light and darker colors. I like how the flowers represent the whole image of the website and it repeats the image throughout out the categories in each box. I also like how for every new entry there is a box which makes it more easy to read and less confusing.

Withering Beauty is my least favorite because it is really hard to read some of the words because there is not enough contrast to make the words pop-out more. The contrast between the background and the subheading are too alike and it becomes a strain to the eyes from trying to read the message. I also think they made a bad choice in the font for the headings. It might be the color and contrast and the cursive font that is making it hard to read what the headings say. I also think the the words need to be slightly bigger. Overall, I like the image but the contrast is really bad in the website design.
My least favorite layout was ‘a walk in the garden’ this is my least favorite because i feel like if you take away the large image of the dirty boot and the dirt in the bottom corner, there wouldn’t be much of anything that catches your eye. There is hardly any contrast other than that and the only repetition is the greed sub headings. However, the other principles of design are lacking. This isn’t that effective because the whole point of CRAP is to draw the reader in and keep them following all the information effectively.
My favorite layout was ‘Sakura’ this design layout was very bright and eye catching. The colors all go well together and even without the image at the top it still catches the eye of the reader. You can look at the layout and be directed clearly through all the information. There is repetition and contrast that pull the reader in. The format is very consistent. It is clear to see where another sub heading would go by the repetition used. I like this format the most because the colors play well off of each other and it just does everything a CRAPy layout is supposed to do. This one if more effective because it does a lot more of the principles of design.

My favorite design on that website is the “Make ‘Em Proud” design. It is colorful and the use of the colors also offset each other nicely. It shows the homepage artwork with a list of tabs on the side, which I think is a very good design. My least favorite is “Tiny Blue.” The only color it consists of is blue, and all of the information is just listed in the center of the page. It is very plain and boring.
I really like the design called ‘Under The Sea!’ (http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=213/213.css). I think its easy to read and very interesting looking. I really don’t like the design called ‘Kelmscott’ (http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=176/176.css). I think it’s really busy, hard to read, and boring because it is just black and white. To follow the c.r.a.p. design principles, I would remove the busy background and use something that would add more contrast. I would also add more contrast in the fonts and colors that it uses. The alignment would look better if the text box was in the center of the screen. The proximity and repetition are fine but not important because currently they are being overwhelmed by the busy background.
After looking at some of the layouts on csszengarden.com, I decided that my favorite would be “Oceanscape” by Justin Gray. The use of the ocean getting darker and darker as you scroll down the page makes it more appealing to the viewer. The fish on the sides of the articles give it a nice, realistic touch. My least favorite of the layouts would be “Under the Sea” by Eric Stoltz. It’s definitely a different design, but it’s one that I think doesn’t help the page at all. The pictures at the bottom really take away from the rest of the page, as I think it takes up too much of the layout.
