Magazine Cover – Imani Abdus-Saboor

This magazine cover of Adele has contrast, alignment, repetition of text, and also proximity. Firstly, the orange and blue are complementary colors, so the orange text, and her blue shirt display great contrast. Next, there is alignment on both the left hand and right hand side. Everything has a concise placement on the cover. Another one of the elements I noticed was the font. There are a few different fonts, one that looks italicized in small print. The most important information is in the biggest font, they are the story title pitches, while underneath, it gives a brief description in a much smaller and different font. Also, the picture of Adele’s face draws attention because it is up close and personal.

This Sports Illustrated cover is from early October, back when the Phillies were still in the playoffs, with Cliff Lee and Ryan Madson on the cover. Both pitchers are wearing white jerseys and some of the font is white, which I think is OK but I would have liked the white font to have a red trim. I do like that the pitchers are on Citizens Bank Park’s field and you can see center field and the ivy behind the center field wall.

This Teen Vogue magazine was released in May, and the cover definitely reflects that. The colors of the type are all very bright, and the color yellow was used for the word “Sunny” which definitely fits. Miley Cyrus is pictured outside with a white dress on and flowers in her hair, reflective of the season. The cover also mentions something about an article on dresses, which is appropriate because that is what the model is wearing.

The cover I selected is a Time Magazine cover with Julian Assange, the founder of the website WikiLeaks. The picture is in black and white, except for an American flag covering his mouth. This makes the image pop and catches the eye. It is also thought-provoking, because Assange and WikiLeaks is known for being a whistle-blower on supposedly secret information. There’s nothing too flashy on the cover, but if you know who Julian Assange is you are more likely to pick it up and look at the article. The tagline on the side gives a little more information as to what the story is about, but the cover itself doesn’t give too much info other than the symbolism in the picture.

Andrew Koob Magazine Cover
This Sports Illustrated cover from March 2011 shows the five Philadelphia Phillies pitchers all looking at the viewer. The use of the black background really makes the players more noticeable and make them pop out to the viewer. The cover follows a strict color pattern of black, red, and white, making it easier to look at without being confused as to what the hell is going on with the color scheme.

Nylon magazine is known to the fashion world for it’s excellent choice in not only new fashions, but also new music. However, the style of their magazine layouts are also quite noteworthy. For the most part, they are kept simple, as is shown on this Japanese cover on Alexa Chung. Her picture is the focal point. The type is bold (NYLON in red and “The TV Issue” in yellow–contrasting colors and also text). The text is organized so that the focal point still remains the center of the magazine cover.

This cover uses very little type, they have the magazine title and then a sub titles at the bottom by Ali’s feet. The photo is a very shocking one to say the least; to see the biggest sports icon of the time shot with arrows is something that will draw people in. The color used is a light gray background that contrasts from Ali’s skin but sort of blends in with the shorts he was wearing. It draws you into looking at his body that is filled with arrows. I think it is a pretty shocking image to have and that is exactly what they were going for to force people into buying the magazine. They give no information as to why they have this image and it forces someone to buy it to read and find out why.
